During my college years, I did a research thesis conducted alongside two dental colleagues. We delved into the movement of pharmaceutical substances through transepithelial routes, specifically focusing on the Buccal Mucosa (the inner lining of the cheeks). We found this avenue offers significant advantages in terms of permeability, allowing pharmaceutical substances to be absorbed and transported more efficiently to the bloodstream compared to the gastrointestinal route (oral ingestion). To simplify, our cheeks' inner lining can swiftly absorb and transport pharmaceutical substances, including potentially harmful ones found in dental and pharmaceutical products. Meaning these toxins are entering the bloodstream at a faster rate than oral ingestion. Consider toothpaste, for example; some varieties contain a high load of toxic components. When these toothpastes make contact with our oral mucosa, they can expedite the delivery of these harmful ingredients into our bloodstream, potentially causing harm to vital organs such as the kidneys, liver, and pancreas.
